Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing is a powerful tool and body centered therapy that is used to help resolve trauma symptoms in the body. When we are under stress or experience trauma our body goes into fight, flight or freeze or has a collapsed response. SE can help identify where a person is stuck in this process and gently guide their mind/body through completion of these self-protective responses. I can help you with trauma issues such as: sexual abuse, car accidents, war, neglect, violence, birth trauma, loss, medical trauma and much more.
According to the SE perspective, trauma is not caused by the event itself but when the body/mind cannot move through these difficult events with completion in the body. What happens then is that the body is constantly feeling the helplessness and fear over and over again with no resolution. SE can help stop this cycle in the body.
SE is a slow, gentle technique that does not force a person to re-tell their traumatic story or re-live it. The purpose of the work is to restore the innate wisdom of the body back to balance. By discharging the energy stuck in the body, our body/mind can begin to heal itself and we will notice that our symptoms get better. Instead of continually reprocessing old fears and feelings of helplessness, SE can help reset the nervous system and help you feel more hopeful and empowered about your past, present and future. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (which means I have completed Peter Levine's three year training). I have also completed Larry Heller's NARM 2-year training in Developmental Trauma. In my practice, I work with trauma and the body.
